Statement on the Derek Chauvin Trial Verdict

"While I am pleased that the jury made the right decision in this case and found Derek Chauvin guilty, nothing will bring back George Floyd. It is my sincere hope that today will be the turning point in our history, one that we tell our children about. We all saw the video, we know what happened, and we took to the street to demand change. I take solace in that, in much of the country, our elected leaders heard our cries for change and begun to take steps toward meaningful reforms like banning chokeholds, ending no-knock warrants, and requiring body cameras. But, when states like Florida give civil immunity to drivers who run over people who peacefully protesting, we still have a long way to go in the fight for equality. However and wherever I can, I will be there."
